Finally crossed the Texas-New Mexico border after more than 2500 miles on the bike! Interview at Dairy Queen with Brian Kirk of the Las Cruces Sun-News.

Day 65: May 26, 2007
Las Cruces, New Mexico to Hatch, New Mexico
Distance: 40.2 miles in 2h 55m

Great weather after a night of thunderstorms. A real pleasant and easy ride through some New Mexico farm country.

Day 66: May 27, 2007
Hatch, New Mexico to Silver City, New Mexico
Distance: 98.4 miles in 7h 21m
Total: 2672 miles

The toughest climbing of the trip. Crossing the 8,200-foot Emory Pass on the way to Silver City, plus some dramatic thunderstorms to make things exciting.

Day 67: May 28, 2007
Memorial Day in Silver City, New Mexico

Attended the Memorial Day ceremonies at the Fort Bayard National Cemetery, near Silver City. Cycled there with my friend Jorge Sandoval, who will be joining the ride for the next few weeks.

Distance: 83 miles in 6h 03m
Total: 2771 miles

Crossed the Continental Divide west of Silver City. Also pedaled across the Arizona border and somehow into the Pacific Time Zone. Arizona is sometimes on California time...and sometimes it isn't. Jorge and I ate pizza while camping next to a lake in Duncan, Arizona.

Day 69: May 30, 2007

The lower we go...the hotter it gets...

Day 70: May 31, 2007
Safford, Arizona to Globe, Arizona
Distance: 76 miles in 5h 05m
Total: 2890 miles

Scenic mountains on both sides of the road throughout the day, and a ride through the San Carlos Apache Reservation. Saw lots of signs for casinos. Also saw the same giant truck delivering Doritos two days in a row. The driver, who is an Army veteran, gave us a free bag of Nacho Cheese Doritos. Took a pleasant evening stroll through the town of Globe.

It has taken me a long time to pedal across Texas, but I enjoyed every day of the journey - even the days with the flat tires. Goodbye, Texas!

I'm going to buy my next car in 7 easy installments, like this guy did.

New Mexico farmland with mountains.

New Mexico is a leader in pecan production. Just don't try to pick any yourself.

Crossing the Rio Grande between El Paso and Las Cruces. 2500 miles on the bike!

Menudo is soup with intestines and beans. But at $5.50, how can I say no?

I can't believe they actually named a town Truth or Consequences. It was named after the 1950's game show.

Congested area? Congested with what...ants?

Robert is pedaling his way around New Mexico. He is carrying everything you can think of, including a skateboard.

in Hatch, New Mexico.

Shortly after leaving Hatch, I crossed the Rio Grande again.

Ah...the famous dairy horses of New Mexico.

I am sure they are exporting these beautiful dairy horses to Europe and Asia. Who wouldn't want one of these?

Percha Creek, near Arrey,
New Mexico.

I-25? Never heard of it...and I thought I knew my I's pretty well.

Riding into a thunderstorm near Hillsboro, NM, on the way to crossing the Emory Pass.

At the general store in Hillsboro, NM. Notice the 'Eat here and get gas' sign.

Taking a break to proudly display the Chocolate Chip Cookie of Victory atop the 8,228-foot Emory Pass near Kingston, New Mexico. Immediately after this photo was taken, the cookie was tragically killed and eaten.

It was a long, steep climb to the top of the Emory Pass.

Crossing the Continental Divide

It's all downhill from here - well...mostly.

Rolling down the western side of the Divide. The town of Lordsburg, New Mexico is out there in the distance... somewhere

Home of the Apaches!

Brent (Mr. Doritos) gave us a free bag of Nacho Cheese Doritos from his truck. We saw him two days in a row. Before Doritos entered his life, he used to be a soldier in an air defense artillery unit at Fort Campbell, Kentucky
